Daily News-Record Officials Open Bids For School Complex Lowest Offer Comes In At $52 Million By Jenny Jones Rockingham County Public Schools officials recently opened bids for construction of the schools complex to be built in the eastern part of the county. The lowest bid came in at slightly more than $52 million, officials said. Steve Reid, director of maintenance for Rockingham County Public Schools, said the division received four bids from companies interested in the project. The complex will include River Bend Elementary School, slated to open in 2009, and East Rockingham High School, scheduled to open in 2010. It will be located just outside of Elkton on Rockingham Pike. The lowest bid of $52.07 million came from Howard Shockey & Sons Inc. of Winchester, Reid said. The next lowest bid of $52.9 million came from Nielsen Builders of Harrisonburg, he said. The two remaining bids came from Kenbridge Construction Co. of Kenbridge for $54.3 million and from Branch & Associates Inc. of Roanoke for $55.1 million, Reid said. The bid packages include not only construction of the schools but also site, utility and road work related to the project, he said. Now that the bids have been opened, the school division's architect will review the proposals to make sure all the information is correct. After that happens, Reid said, he will present the lowest bid to the School Board for its consideration. He plans to make that presentation during the board's meeting at 7 p.m. March 11 at Wilbur S. Pence Middle School. Once the School Board accepts the bid, the division gives the construction company a notice to proceed and work will commence as soon as possible, Reid said. The bid process was "very competitive," Reid said. "We're pleased with the numbers."
