Board Contemplates New School's Name
'Cub Run' Considered; Construction on Schedule
By Jeff Mellott
Penn Laird - "Cub Run" is the leading candidate as the name
for the new $16.6 million elementary school under construction next to
Montevideo Middle School.
Cub Run Elementary School received 29 votes from a committee charged to suggest
names for the new school, which is on schedule to open in fall 2008.
Rockingham County School Board members are expected to five the new elementary
school under construction at Penn Laird a name when it meets in two weeks.
Going With The Flow
The 13-member committee also recommended, in descending order, Penn Laird,
Pineville and Summit elementary schools.
School Board Chairman Dan Breeden said the committee wanted to stay away from
names that had the word "view" in it.
The names of two other county elementary schools, Mountain View and Peak View,
already include the word.
The name Cub Run comes from a stream near the construction site, Breeden said.
Bigger School
The new school will be similar to four other elementary
schools, said Maintenance Director Steve Reid.
Except for minor alterations, the new school would be
similar to Lacey Spring, South River, Mountain View and Peak View elementary
schools, Reid said.
One difference between the new schools and the others is that it will be able to
hold 200 more students. The new school's capacity will be for 800
students, compared to 600 each at the other four elementary schools, Reid said.
Another new wrinkle at the school, Reid said, is a vestibule that would
lead visitors to the office instead of a hallway.
General Contractor Nielsen Builders Inc. of Harrisonburg
expects to have the construction under roof by December, he said.
In January, the School Board is expected to begin a
redistricting process to adjust elementary school lines.
