Nielsen Builders, Incorporated, has a long history of commercial construction throughout the
Shenandoah Valley and western Virginia. For almost
100 years,
founder Joseph Nielsen and his successors have taken great pride in creating
stunning structures throughout the Shenandoah Valley. Mr. Nielsen began his
career as an interior decorator and designer.
Joseph
Nielsen founded J. Nielsen & Co. in 1908. In 1917, he moved to
Harrisonburg from Leesburg when he won a contract to decorate First National
Bank, which today is Bank of America in downtown Harrisonburg.
In 1924, Mr. Nielsen acquired
the Harrisonburg building firm W.M. Bucher and Son, and renamed his company
Nielsen Construction Company. The company was incorporated in 1951. Mr.
Nielsen retired in 1961, and Rockingham County native Samuel Shrum succeeded him
as company president. 
Employing more than 230 people, the company generates more than eighty million dollars of project revenue each year. The company offers a broad range of project delivery systems from program management, construction management, and general contracting to design-build, and consulting services. The seamless project delivery system guarantees a smooth transition among all phases of a project.
The company has offices in Harrisonburg, Va., and Charlottesville, Va. It includes two divisions, Nielsen Management Group and Nielsen Construction Company. It is recognized as a premier construction business serving clients within the commonwealth of Virginia.
Clients include schools and universities, hospitals, and senior living facilities. Nielsen is recognized as a leader in the construction industry because of its innovative construction techniques and product development.
